Postpartum Depletion 101

Postpartum Depletion 101

What is it?

Postpartum depletion describes the physical, mental, and emotional exhaustion many women experience after having a baby. It's more than being "tired", it's a deeper level of fatigue that can impact mood, energy, concentration, and overall wellbeing. It develops when the immense demands of pregnancy, birth, and caring for a newborn aren't matched with enough rest, recovery, and nourishment.

What causes it?

  1. Nutrient depletion from pregnancy, birth, and breastfeeding

  2. Sleep deprivation and round-the-clock caregiving

  3. Hormonal shifts in the weeks and months after birth

  4. Reduced personal time and lack of adequate social support

  5. Chronic stress from the physical and emotional load of motherhood

Common symptoms

  • Persistent fatigue even after sleeping

  • Mood changes - irritability, overwhelm, low mood

  • Brain fog, forgetfulness, and reduced concentration

  • Low energy and reduced motivation

  • Physical signs such as hair loss, muscle or joint aches

  • Evidence of nutrient deficiencies (iron, vitamin D,B12, omegas, zinc)
