The Menstrual Cycle Phases

The Menstrual Cycle Phases

1. Menstrual Phase

This is the start of the cycle, marked by menstruation-the shedding of the uterine lining if pregnancy hasn't occurred. Oestrogen and progesterone levels are lower.

2. Follicular Phase

Overlapping with menstruation, this phase begins when the brain signals the ovaries to start maturing follicles (tiny sacs containing eggs). Ostrogen levels gradually rise, thickening the uterine lining in preparation for possible implantation. Many feel more energised and focused during this time.

3. Ovulation Phase

The body reaches peak fertility as a mature egg is released from the ovary. Oestrogen levels peak, triggering luteinising hormone (LH), which helps the egg travel down the fallopian tube. Some experience mild cramping, increased libido, or changes in cervical mucus.

4. Luteal Phase

Following ovulation, progesterone dominates, stabilizing the uterine lining in case of pregnancy. If fertilisation doesn't happen, hormone levels drop, which is some ladies can contribute to PMS symptoms like mood swings, bloating, and cravings. As the cycle nears completion, menstruation begins again.

Each phase has a unique effect on mood, energy, and physical well-being. Understanding these patterns can help you optimise health, self-care, and even productivity.
