Postpartum hair loss.

Postpartum hair loss - why does it happen and what can we do to support hair health?

Postpartum hair loss is a form of temporary shedding and loss of hair contributed from a drop in oestrogen levels after birth. Postpartum hair loss often peaks around 3 to 4 months after birth however this varies from woman to woman.

Normal hair growth should return by 12 months after birth.

Nutrition considerations to support hair health includes:

  • Consuming a healthy, whole foods diet full of a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables.

  • Consuming a source of quality protein in every meal. Amino acids are the building blocks for collagen and healthy hair growth and repair.

  • Consuming collagen + bone broth. Both are full of essential minerals for healthy hair growth.

  • Consuming healthy fats in the diet such as olive oil, nuts and seeds, chia seeds, avocado, oily fish.

  • Aim for 2Ltr filter water daily.

Other considerations include stress management and optimising sleep patterns for both hormonal health and nervous system support.

Other factors for hair loss including stress, low vitamin and mineral levels, thyroid conditions and pharmaceuticals. If you’re experiencing significant hair loss post 12 months, it would be beneficial to get run some pathology to ensure both your thyroid function and iron stores are optimal.
